The oil your Volkswagen actually needs
Ignore 5W-30 on the front of the bottle. You want the VW 502 / 504 / 508 approval on the back.

The viscosity on the front of the jug is advertising. Volkswagen engines want a specific approval printed on the back: 502 00, 504 00, or 508 00. Put the wrong one in an EA888 and you gamble with the timing chain and cam wear. We see it after a quick lube on the pike.

Cheat sheet (always confirm on the cap / manual)
| Typical U.S. cars | VW approval | Common viscosity |
|---|---|---|
| Tiguan 2009–2017 (2.0T) | 502 00 | 5W-40 or 5W-30 with 502 on the label |
| Many 2018–2021 gas turbos | 502 00 or 504 00 | VIN-dependent — read the book |
| Tiguan / Jetta / Taos / Atlas ~2022+ | 508 00 | 0W-20 (low-viscosity, high-efficiency) |
| Golf R / GTI (check year) | 502 00 or 508 00 | Performance cars are picky. Don’t guess. |
How often
Follow the book. Many newer VWs allow up to 10,000 miles or one year with the correct oil under normal use. Long Island stop-and-go, short trips, and summer A/C idle are closer to severe service — we would rather change it sooner than explain a chain.
Can you do it at home?
- Yes, if you have the drain spec, a torque wrench for the plug, the right filter, and a way to dispose of oil in Nassau County.
- Reset the service interval in the cluster or it will nag you forever.
- If the car is under warranty or CPO, a paper trail from a VW dealer is the clean argument. We use OEM filters and the correct 508/502 stock.
Education, not a work order. Specs vary by VIN. Owner’s manual and a quote from Platinum Volkswagen LLC win arguments. Schedule service.
